What are they?
A familiar is essentially a piece of the wolf's soul that becomes contained and bonded into another living creature. The two can speak telepathically to one another over great distances even if neither posses the ability to do this with any other creature. To become bonded, the two must come into close contact with one another in some way, even just walking through the woods the two will feel a connection begin to form. It is an impossible thing to fight, as when two souls are bonded they can not be broken. The animal a wolf bonds to can be anything from the tiniest field mouse to the greatest beasts such as a dragon; though clearly some are more rare than others. Though bound together, they are not slaved to one another. Both still have free will and one can not command the other to action.
